About

Community Chest Limited was established in 1984 after investigations revealed the necessity for a national organization to address the escalating need for children with severe cardiac conditions. It was duly incorporated as a Non-Government Organization on 01 June 1985. Mr. Johnny Rooks, Drs. David Bratt and Edmund Chamely were the main pioneers.

About us

Heart

Initially, its primary focus was securing care for children with congenital heart defects, where treatment was not available locally. Between 1984 and 2009, over 355 children were sent overseas for surgery, through arrangements with hospitals mainly in the United States and Canada. The majority of these children are alive and well today.

Orthopaedic

Community Chest also extended its aide programme to include Orthopaedic issues such as scoliosis for children through the Princess Elizabeth Home, as well as individual cases where surgery or specialized treatment and/or tests were necessary for promoting optimal medical care for children in need.

Orthopaedic Surgeries

For over 16 years Community Chest Ltd. has been supporting orthopedic surgery at the Princess Elizabeth Centre.

Every year Community Chest provides accomodation for a team of doctors from the University of Pennslyvania who come to Trinidad to perform difficult and intricate spinal surgeries and other orthopedic procedures for children.

Partnering with our own renowned orthopedic surgeon, Dr. David Toby, Dr. Vincent Arlet and his team attempt the most difficult procedures with great success. The work done by the team is entirely pro bono.
